On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Swiss Society for Thermal Analysis & Calorimetry, a symposium was held at the ETH in Zuerich on March 28, 2001.

Introduction

The Swiss Society of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry was founded in 1975 by Prof. G. Bayer, Zürich, Dr. A. Delay, Lausanne, Dr. E. Dubler, Zürich, Prof. P. Lerch, Lausanne, Dr. E. Marti, Basel, Dr. M. Müller-Vonmoos, Zürich, Prof. H.R. Oswald, Zürich, Prof. W. Richarz, Zürich and Dr. H.G. Wiedemann, Greifensee. The society grew rapidely and has now about 120 members. Members are from all parts of Switzerland, from university, industry and manufacturers of instrumentation.

STK is member of the ESTAC (European Society for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry) and of the international society ICTAC (International Confederation for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry) which cover 46 countries with 550 members. In 1992 a new european society eurostar-science organizing scientific conferences in Europe was born with a nucleus of the board members of the STK. Every year national meetings of STK as well as from time to time joined meetings with the French, the Italian or the German partner society take place. The symposium ESTAC 3 was organized by the board members of STK 1984 in Interlaken with more than 300 participants.

STK promotes research of high level and is presenting an Award Price for “Applied Chemical Thermodynamics” nearly every year and also a price for “Young scientists”.

We are very grateful to Dr. E. Marti who promotes Swiss thermal analysis over years as President of the STK and to all other foundation members who are present to-day in Zürich.

It is a very great pleasure for me to open this celebrating day of the 25th anniversary of STK in ETH-Zürich.

The President of STK
Dr. D. Giron
